Creepy and tragic. The loneliness being so complete that the embrace of something that mimics/learns the motions of love or intimacy is preferred. It reminds me of the ongoing conversation around AI or social media dependence. People withdrawing, allowing artificial connections to replace the real ones without realizing until later. Or maybe realizing and not caring. At least no dogs were harmed in this one 😉
Man, you always zero in on the exact thing I’m trying to get under the skin of with these stories.
“The loneliness being so complete that the embrace of something that mimics intimacy is preferred” is basically the emotional thesis of the whole piece.
Because I think a lot of horror right now is about that: people getting so starved for connection, attention, understanding, touch, comfort… that eventually imitation starts feeling close enough.
And honestly? “Or maybe realizing and not caring” is the line that really got me. That’s the part that scares me that I was exploring here.
Also yes, no dogs harmed this time. 😂 I learned my lesson after emotionally devastating everyone with the last one.
