The Record Was Never Alone
A notice for the Archivists who have begun comparing notes.
The Archive began with first accounts.
That description is no longer sufficient.
A person entered a room. A floor moved. A voice answered. A body improved. A name stopped pointing back to the person who carried it.
The witness told us what they could.
That has never been the same as the whole record.
A first account is bounded by the person who survives it. It ends where their sight ends, where memory fails, where an institution closes the door, where another witness keeps quiet because speaking would cost too much, or where an object waits under a chair cushion until the only person who understands it finally looks beneath.
The main file remains the main file. It carries the person, the event, and the truth they were able to give us. It is complete.
The exhibits are what survived beside it.
